The Crags

This hike is amazing. Stunning. Gorgeous. Its a great hike for anyone who wants to feel quintessential Colorado. It’s also not difficult, so even if you’re not adjusted to the altitude, you can still enjoy the hike. The whole thing is about 6 miles round trip.

The trail head is about an hour from Springs located in Divide. To get there from Springs you take HWY 24 west to CO-67. From CO-62 you’ll turn onto a dirt road. Its marked with a small sign that says Crags Campground. Follow the dirt road and turn right when you reach the Mennonite Camp. You’ll follow this until you reach the trail head.

We went early, getting there at 630 am, and I am so glad that we did because we had the whole trail to ourselves. The trail is directly across from the parking lot. It connects to Devil’s Playground, however both the trails are well marked so its easy to stay on the right one. The trail gets steep for a little bit (less than a half mile) and then is flat until you almost reach the summit. There are incredible rock formations to look at and tons of Aspen trees. It would be a beautiful hike to do in the fall. You walk through a fairly flat grassy meadow that has lots of wild flowers for a little bit before the trail reenters the woods and starts to climb again.

The summit is breathtaking. You get a 360 view of mountains and valleys and you can see three different reservoirs. Its hard not to stay up there because there’s just so much to see. Over the whole trail you only gain 800 ft or so of elevation. Its an amazing view without all the hard work!
