What to wear to your photo session

What do I wear? Never an easy question (for most of us) even in every day life. Then you start thinking about in for your photo session and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. After all pictures last forever, don’t they? But don’t overthink it! Here’s some helpful tips that may help to choose that perfect outfit.

  • Don’t wear something you wouldn’t normally wear. If you are uncomfortable and constantly fidgeting because you went with heels when you normally wear boots or super tight jeans when you’re more of a legging person, your discomfort is going to show. Getting in front of a camera can be hard enough as is wear something that shows off who you are.
  • Think about color. If you’re doing a session outdoors neutrals and blues look amazing. Even a few deeper jewel tones like purple and emerald can be perfect. Try to think about where your photos are being done and choose colors that will contrast with it. For example- if there’s going to be a bunch of orange/red rocks in the background don’t wear orange or red. If you’re on a black couch don’t wear black leggings.
  • Coordinate, don’t match. If everyone wears white shirts and blue jeans its hard to make people pop in group shots. Wearing similar colors helps everyone look coordinated, but not too matchy matchy. Stick to a color scheme like blues or black and grey or all cool colors/all warm colors. In the same turn everyone should be at the same level of dressiness. Don’t have someone in jeans and a button up and another person in sweatpants and a hoody.
  • Either go fitted or flowy. Flowy dresses are so fun to play with and look amazing in photos- especially for family and engagement shots. Fitted clothes give you nice sleek line in photos and makes sure there no weird folds or creases. It also helps show off your gorgeous shape (yes you have one!). Thing that are loose but not quite flowy can tend to make you look shapeless and we don’t want that!
  • Be real. This is similar to the first point. If you’re doing an inhome session where what you would normally wear at home. Sweatpants and a hoodie? Great! Do you walk around your house in your underwear? If your comfortable with it just wear that! Your photographer shouldn’t make it awkward and the goal is to capture who you are at home.
  • Fall/Winter/Spring: bring layers. Especially here in Colorado the weather changes so fast. And you can get home doing photos! Bring layers you can slip on and off easily as you get too hot or too cold and back again. Bonus- it can look like more than one outfit.
Coordinated, but not matching! Blue is one of my favorite colors anyway, but this family looked amazing!
Black and gray look so good!
